Branding: it's so stupid not to. ~ Sidney Wood Ask Me Anything about being an indie author, marketing on a budget, and why it is important to market yourself as much as your book.

Indie authors must imprint on their readers. Marketing a book is hard. It is harder if you are invisible. I'll give you some quick tips on how to enhance your brand on a budget.

In the past 2 years I have published four novels and a short story, with another full length novel in the editiing phase. Have questions about the writing process, book covers, or publishing on a budget?

Social media is necessary these days, but a balance is important. How do I manage twitter, facebook, a website, and still manage to write 2-3 books a year? Oh, and by the way, I have a full time job and a family. Ask!

Let's get started!

How do you get your book designed (cover and interior)?

Nov 11, 5:56AM EST0

I contract out to an amazing artist who designs award winning covers for a living. Somehow, she gets what I want each time, leaving me speechless. If you can find that, and it doesn’t cost a fortune, stick with that person!!

How to cover the cost of branding efficiently?

Nov 10, 8:14AM EST0

I’m not sure you can put a price on it. It’s more about putting in the hours and being consistent with your message. Brand Images, logos, catch phrases, or thematic elements for social media are all things you can pay for, but you don’t have to. There are tons of quality free apps to create your own. Oh and by the way, don’t give up! Ever!

Does a big ego help or hurt writers?

Nov 8, 1:18AM EST0

Confidence is important, especially when promoting your work. Nobody’s going to sell you better than you. On the other hand, being too proud to accept criticism is a weakness that can hurt you...a lot. Great question!

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

Nov 7, 8:38PM EST0

I have one unpublished novel due out next month, and one partially complete, about 30K words currently.

What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?

Nov 7, 3:42PM EST0

I have to say it’s selling “publishing” services to writers who won’t make it. That sounds bad, but it’s true. Vanity publishers, or pay to play publishers will take anybody willing to fork over the dough. Unfortunately, nobody but them makes any money 99.9% of the time. They promise big but deliver small. I see that a lot in my area.

Nov 8, 10:18PM EST0

Who is your favorite author?

Nov 7, 9:56AM EST0

Victor Gischler is a favorite! Dark...

Nov 8, 10:22PM EST0

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Nov 7, 7:37AM EST0

Most days it energizes me! I guess that’s true of anything you love to do. There are days though... lol

Nov 8, 10:23PM EST0

Do you believe any book idea is marketable?

Nov 7, 5:53AM EST0

I don’t just think it, I know it. There are billions of people out there, with varying interests and quirks to connect with. The trick is reaching them.

Nov 8, 10:26PM EST0

Phew! (goes back to work)

What do you do in your spare time?

Nov 7, 12:44AM EST0

Most of my free time is spent writing, wrangling a toddler, or being a snarky husband to my adorable wife. I hunt in the fall and do a lot of cooking too. I love riding during the short season up here in AK. All of the sudden I feel like a giant bore. Thanks for that.

Nov 8, 10:36PM EST0

How long does it take you to come up with a topic?

Nov 6, 6:53PM EST0

I can’t stop coming up with them! If I could only live another hundred years. Seriously, I have enough book ideas to keep us all going lol. If I ever get stuck I just go outside for a while. Something about running or even walking gets my brain humming.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Nov 6, 6:34PM EST0

Pay attention to grammar in school. Thank God for google is all I can say. I’m a college graduate, yet I feel like an idiot some days.

Nov 8, 10:40PM EST0

Do you think that physical books will eventually become obsolete?

Nov 6, 2:52PM EST0

Gosh, I hope not! I love books! I think enough of us still love holding a book and flipping the pages to keep the tree choppers in business a little longer.

Nov 8, 10:41PM EST0

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

Nov 6, 11:35AM EST0

My mother was an English teacher, so she introduced me to creative writing. My father was fond of making us write reports when my siblings and I were young. Between the two, I learned early that reading and writing mattered, and that ignorance can easily be displayed in both.

Nov 8, 10:45PM EST0

Who is a trending author to watch out for nowadays in your eyes?

Nov 6, 11:04AM EST0

Hmmm...there’s a guy. Steven? No... Stanley? No... oh! Sidney Wood! That’s the one to watch ;)

Nov 8, 10:47PM EST0

What are the most important magazines for writers to subscribe to?

Nov 6, 9:56AM EST0

I suppose that depends on the type of writing you do. Personally, I enjoy anything with dramatic and adventurous pictures. National Geographic was the go to for me anytime I needed to escape.

Nov 9, 10:00PM EST0

Have you got a Facebook page I could like?

Nov 6, 8:46AM EST0

Of course!  Click HERE

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

Nov 6, 8:19AM EST0

My first book was written scene to scene, with no idea where I was heading until I arrived. It was exciting, liberating, and very disjointed. It took an enormous amount of editing and rewriting to shape it into something resembling a novel. I learned to take that same enthusiastic free-for-all and apply it to a regimented storyline.  It takes a bit of both to make something great!

Nov 9, 10:05PM EST0

How long have you been writing?

Nov 6, 7:38AM EST0

About ten minutes now. Oh, you mean in total... hmmm I guess it’s been about 1.5 million minutes. (3 years)

Nov 9, 10:08PM EST0

Do you Google yourself?

Nov 6, 6:25AM EST0

Don’t you? Let’s not make it weird...

Nov 9, 10:08PM EST0

Do you have a muse?

Nov 6, 6:24AM EST0

I shot a moose last month actually. You know what really inspires me though? The mountains. I am fortunate enough to have lived in Alaska for 41 years. I see the most magnificent mountains everyday!
