AUTISM ANYONE??? I'm a TWIN Mom, NICU Mom, AUTISM Mom, and that's just the half of it! Seriously, ASK ME ANYTHING!

Meghan Ashburn

I am the author of  Not an Autism Mom. I write about my experiences with autism, prematurity, twinning, and everything in between!

I am a mother raising four boys. We have a blended family. The twins, spent 6 weeks in the NICU. Since then, they've seen countless doctors, therapists, and specialists.

My youngest was officially diagnosed with Autsim in March. Since then, both boys have been in ABA therapy.

Feel free to ask me anything about the NICU, RSV, life with twins, autism, ABA therapy, and anything else you can think of.

Ask me about my blog! It's fairly new, but my articles have been featured on The Mighty, She Knows, and WordPress Discover.

Follow me on Facebook!

Follow me on Twitter! I'm new to Twitter. And I hate being tardy to the party! It's like being the new kid in middle school... Not a good feeling!

I hope to hear from you!

Why don’t we use GIFS anymore? Is that a thing of angsty teens and Tumblr?

Do you feel that medical researchers and medical professionals are making some progress with moving away from older, stereotypical understandings of autism? E.g. the idea that autism is caused by  poor parenting, or the equally false view that people with autism are lacking in empathy.

Nov 8, 1:34PM EST0

Yes I do. I think credit is also due to parents, organizations, and people with autism. They've worked hard to spread awareness and acceptance.

As a mom, I have never felt shamed or blamed for my child having autism. I know that wouldn't have been the case a few decades ago.

Nov 8, 1:46PM EST1

That's really heartening to hear. Thanks so much for this.

Does your blog have a loyal following?

Nov 7, 11:01AM EST0

My blog is fairly new... only six months old. I think most of my loyal readers have a personal connection to someone in my family.

Other than that, people simply click on my article if it looks interesting, just like we all do. It's up to me to keep them coming back.

Nov 7, 6:53PM EST0

How are you coping having a child with autism?

Nov 7, 6:27AM EST0

The word "coping" seems a bit negative... Maybe adjusting, handling, and most days juggling.

All of my kids have issues. I have issues. My mom has issues. (My aunt definitely has issues. 😉)

Autism is a big issue, that takes up a lot of my time. I'm often drained, but I think having four kids has a lot to do with that.

So I'm juggling as fast as I can. I drop a ball every now and then. But I pick it back up and just keep juggling. ❤

Nov 7, 7:00PM EST0

Cool! I love that word juggling. Wish you all the best Meghan.

Nov 9, 7:47AM EST1

Wow. That was a wonderful article. Thank you for sharing.

A lot of his feelings are similar to how I feel. And there isn't enough support for families.

I will definitely buy the books he mentioned.

He's one of my favorite authors. He wrote The Cloud Atlas, Ghostwritten, Slade House and The Bone Clocks amongst a few others.

Do you have to drink wine to be a good blogger?

Nov 7, 5:18AM EST0

No, of course not. I drink tequila, myself. 😉

Nov 7, 10:25AM EST0

How do you stop spam comments?

Nov 7, 5:18AM EST0

There are plug-ins for that particular problem.

Nov 7, 10:24AM EST0

What do you do to keep up your energy level?  How do you find "me time"?

Nov 6, 9:36PM EST0

Honestly, I've been kind of tired lately. But I keep pushing, because that's what moms do.

I absolutely love my kick boxing class. But I haven't been in a couple weeks. I need to get back into the rhythm because it does brighten my day.

Thanks for that reminder. ❤

I have twin girls and have multiple appointments and diagnoses for one of them. How do you handle the other one feeli g ledt out and jealous that their sibling is getting more of the attention? And how do you make them understand that the other one needs are different and cannot treat them the same?

Nov 6, 8:23PM EST0

It's a blessing and a curse that both of my twins need pretty much the same amount of help.

Even though one of my twins doesn't have an autism diagnosis, he is still very delayed. He has the same amount of appointments and they are in the same class.

They aren't yet at the point of getting jealous. Maybe you can let me know when you figure it out. Then you can teach me. 😉

Nov 6, 10:50PM EST0

I have a burning question.  Who's your favorite aunt.... and why?

Nov 6, 3:27PM EST1

Hmmm... That's a tough one. I'm gonna have to get back with you on that one. 😉

Just teasing! My Aunt Jan is an amazingly smart, inappropriate, talented person who makes me and my kids lots of quilts.

She also lets me call her after I've had a couple drinks, so I can talk about really important issues. ❤❤❤

How do your older boys react to their brothers with autism?

Nov 6, 1:46PM EST0

I have 2 older boys, who 12 and 13. They are amazing big brothers. I honestly don't know what I'd do without them.

They take on a lot of responsibility when we go on outings. They are patient, silly, and have a ton of fun! ❤

What is your blog address/link? What is it about?

Nov 6, 12:58PM EST0

I write articles about autism, prematurity, and parenting in general.

If you are employed, are your employers sensitive to your needs as a mother with autistic children / offer some means of support? How do you think employers/school administrators can make life eaiser for persons with special needs and their caregivers? Do you have any tips and tricks for parents with autistic children or do you feel handling is purely individualistic? Who's responsibility do you feel it is to enforce such inclusions in the workplace/other - government / policy makers or individuals affected? Are you optimistic about the future for those with autism?

All the best to you!

Great questions!

Parents of children with disabilities need more flexibility. They have doctor's appointments, therapies, and IEP meetings. But they also need to keep their jobs. Employers can accomodate their employees in a number of ways.

 1. Create a flexible schedule when possible

2. Allow employees to make up missed hours

3. Allow the employee to work from home when possible

4. Simply ask the employee how the company can be supportive.

Parents can also apply for FMLA, which helps to ensure they aren't fired for missing work due to their child's disability.

Do you think doctors will figure out the cause of autism soon?

Nov 6, 8:01AM EST0

Doctors will continue to research the causes of autism. But I don't think they will find "one smoking bullet," as autism is a diagnosis of behaviors. Each case is unique.

Have you published any articles?

Nov 6, 6:42AM EST0

I post most of my articles on my own blog, Not an Autism Mom. You can also find my work on The Mighty and She Knows. One of my latest articles will soon be featured in Autism Parenting Magazine.

Who is a trending author to watch out for nowadays in your eyes?

Nov 6, 6:42AM EST0

Do you belong to any support groups you can recommend?

Nov 6, 4:06AM EST0

I highly recommend joining a local support group in your area. The Autism Society of America (ASA) has local chapters all over the country. You can find your local chapter here. They host meetings where you can talk to parents in your area. I've made some great connections.

There are also Facebook support groups you can join. Some are local. Others are national and even global. I've joined a few, but find the local ones to me more helpful. Every state has different laws and services, so local groups can help you navigate the system better.

Does only 1 of the twins have Autism?

Nov 5, 11:27PM EST0

Only one of them is diagnosed with autism. His brother is also delayed, but not diagnosed.

Nov 6, 10:41AM EST0

Do you have a special place where you go to be inspired?

Nov 5, 12:24PM EST0

My house is inspiration enough! But I love talking to other parents about their journeys. We all have a story to tell, and I find inspiration in each one.

What do you think of the trend in digital media nowadays?
